Island of Bute - A land of contrasts

Mount Stuart House

An island of complete contrasts as it is split by the Highland Boundary Fault. To the south of the fault lies lush, fertile farm land, whilst the north is distinguished by rolling moors and a rugged coast line. Yet the southern shore facing to Arran and Little Cumbrae is wild with coves and basalt ridges running down to the sea. A beautiful path runs from Kilchattan with its wide sandy beaches that face east to the rocky western shore right around the southern tip and is connected by bus from either end.

Mount Stuart House, the seat of the Marquis of Bute is one of the world’s most beautiful and interesting stately homes and has been used by several world famous personailities for weddings and celebrations. During the summer months guided tours are available and should not be missed. A regular bus service connects with the ferry from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay. The grounds are extensive and reach down to delightful wooded beaches and shingle shore and can be enjoyed free of charge throughout the year.
